Dom Clegg wins Cyclopark 2/3

I was back at Cyclopark for round 3 of the SERRL Winter Series. I wasn’t planning on coming back this soon as my training plan was 3 hours of tempo, but I had to make amends for my DNF last week thanks to puncture. I had replaced the tyre with a Continental GP4000s and vowed never to return to Michelin. Training this week has been a grand total of 3 hours on the turbo so I was undertrained but with fresh legs.

Conditions were bright with a strong tail wind on the finish straight. I attacked early on to try and get a break going but it came to nothing when no one came across. I tried again soon after getting caught with the same outcome so I decided to wait in the peloton and hopefully a break would get going that I could bridge across to.

A promising trio did eventually drift off the front. Once it had 10 seconds I jumped across to join Josh Outram, a Richardson-Trek rider and Dave from Bottecchia. We worked together to pull out a healthy lead on the chasers which looked unassailable by the time the 5 lap board came out. With 3 laps to go I attacked hard but Josh and RT were straight on it. Josh then attacked coming up to the last lap bell which I had to respond to. These big efforts near the finish are risky tactics but I felt like I had a matches left to burn. The last lap was slow as we eyed each other up. I somehow got a gap coming out the penultimate corner and decided to go for it and powered away from my breakaway companions leaving me plenty of time to get arms aloft coming over the line.

Super pleased to get my first win since I was a cat 3 at Hillingdon!
